Grant
High School is a co-educational
government school of 740 students and
75 staff. It is located in Mount Gambier,
a city of 25,000 people, which boasts
a very lucrative primary industry including
pine growing, wine making, lobster processing,
and dairying.
Grant High School has offered Japanese
as a subject for the last 13 years,
and boasts a high retention rate of
Year 8 students who continue the language
through to Year 12.
Grant High School has a sister-school
relationship with Soja Minami Senior
High School in Okayama Japan. For the
last 15 years, both schools have participated
in short (three week) and long term
(twelve month) exchanges.
Presently, Grant High School has a native
Japanese teaching assistant, Tomoko
Kubota, who is part of the Rex Program
and is on loan from the Education Department
of Okayama for twenty months. We are
very pleased to have her.
Grant High School is one of four secondary
schools in Mount Gambier. Our students
come from 6 feeder primary schools.
Three high schools and three primary
schools teach Japanese in Mount Gambier.
However, students from primary and secondary
schools from nearby Penola and Tarpeena
would also participate in this visit
by Wonderbus Japan.

"Albury-Wodonga
lies along the Murray River on the border of Victoria
and New South Wales. There aren't many Japanese people
living in our town, but there are many students studying
Japanese who are keen to discover more about Japan. Wodonga
Primary School is delighted to host the Wonderbus in March
2005. Our Grade 5 and 6 students are forming a committee
which will be responsible for co-ordinating a variety
of student-centred demonstrations and performances from
schools around the area, to complement the activities
provided by the Japan Foundation on the day. We look forward
to sharing Japanese culture with the Albury-Wodonga community.
TANOSHIMI NI SHITE IMASU!"
